Our Story

The Abbey - A Place to Meet & Eat

In September of 1974 Alvin Counard pedaled his bike from NE Green Bay to De Pere to finalize his Sheriff's Auction bid on the former End Zone Supper Club. The Supper Club had occupied the former Witbro Grocery Store at 208 S. 3rd Street. Alvin & his partners would convert the End Zone Supper Club into The Abbey Bar. The Abbey immediately became famous among De Pere Locals known as "townies," and SNC students fondly referred to as “SEIP's.”

For 16 years Alvin operated solo until 1990, when sons Kerry & Kip joined their father and operated the Westchester Abbey as a sports bar with indoor golf simulators and basketball court. The current building was built in 1999, and a new chapter began. The old Abbey still stands next to our two story home & outdoor patio, and houses tenant space.

In 2024, we celebrated our 50th year in business. Kerry is again operating The Abbey Bar solo, and would like to thank you all for the countless memories. As with many other businesses, the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 has brought us many challenges. Paying forward has become an integral part of our survival through the pandemic.  We have been honored by the state of Wisconsin, with a “We are Innovative Grant,” and funded by Barstool Sports Barstool Fund @barstoolsports.com , for our continued pay it forward initiatives. We are proud to support several local “non-profits” and other agencies in need.

Additionally, know that you are an important part of this 50+year legacy and history. We feel blessed to have been able to have you help us celebrate our great place to meet and eat in De Pere for over 50+ years.
